Greg Wilmes was born and raised in Waterville, Minnesota, where he spent his elementary years frolicking around The Wilmes Resort located on Lake Tetonka and often played backyard football and sandlot baseball with the neighborhood gang. Greg also enjoyed boating, water skiing, and participating in the Waterville-Elysian elementary wrestling program.
While in high school, Greg participated in wrestling, football, baseball, band and choir, placing three times in the MSHSL individual state wrestling tournament and helping lead the Buccaneers to 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd State team finishes in 1981, 1982, and 1983, respectively. He was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class in 1983.
After high school, Greg attended college at St. Olaf in Northfield and graduated with honors in 1987 with a B.A. degree in English Education. He immediately started his teaching career, teaching grades 7, 10 and 12 in Starbuck, Minnesota, where he also coached football, softball and wrestling. The wrestling team, known as the Waska Warriors, combined athletes from both Starbuck and Glenwood and eventually became the forerunners of a beautiful combined school district named Minnewaska Area after the large lake the new school overlooks.
After two years in Starbuck, Greg moved to St. MIchael-Albertville (STMA) where he primarily taught the 10th and 12th grade English curriculum while again coaching the same three sports. He also directed several senior class plays and worked toward his Master’s Degree in Education through St. Mary’s college. He was an assistant wrestling coach to head coach Gregg Greeno and helped lead STMA to its first state championship in 1996--a launch pad that has created one of Minnesota's perennial wrestling powers.
During his ten years of teaching, Greg worked every summer building homes with fellow teachers and decided to shelf his English books for a career in residential construction after the 1996 school year. He and a friend, Jarrod Waterbury, initially started a small company known as W.W. Roofing which subsequently turned into what it is now, named Greg Wilmes Roofing and Remodeling, LLC. Greg Wilmes Roofing and Remodeling is a small, efficient, reliable, one crew construction company which takes pride in quality work and specializes in all aspects of residential and commercial construction, roofing and remodeling. Greg and his crew of seven have over 100 years of cumulative experience in the construction industry and have completed literally thousands of jobs ranging from landscaping to concrete to roofing, siding, windows, gutters and beyond.
The key to Greg Wilmes Roofing and Remodeling’s success is that Greg is personally on every job site every single day, working hand in hand with his crew to complete the job no matter what it entails.
Greg isn’t only busy running a construction company, he is a single father with three children. Daughters Brooke and Peyton Wilmes currently attend the W-E-M school district and participate in several sports including volleyball, basketball and softball. Older brother Jon is currently working for Greg Wilmes Roofing and Remodeling and plans to get his Contractor’s license or go on to college in the near future. All the kids enjoy boating and jet skiing in the summer months and visiting water parks and vacationing whenever possible during Minnesota's long winters. They also obviously spend a lot of time on evenings and weekends at various sporting events.
Please give Greg a call or shoot him an email if you need an estimate or just have a question. He will be there for you from start to finish, no matter how big or small the project.
